Xiaomi appears to be developing a novel smartphone featuring an innovative mechanism. At first glance, it resembles a conventional clamshell foldable device, but it possesses the capability to detach at the center.

Currently, this is merely a prototype, and it is anticipated that it will take some time before it is officially launched. The experimental phone was identified through a patent application submitted to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA).

The patent application includes detailed sketches illustrating the design of the smartphone and its unique detachable mechanism. When fully opened, the device resembles a standard clamshell foldable, with the screen bending at the midpoint, reports 91Mobiles. However, certain diagrams indicate that the foldable can separate into two distinct sections, held together by what appear to be pogo pins.

Additionally, the upper segment of the foldable may be capable of swiveling, allowing for potential alternative usage. The practical functionality of this feature remains unclear at this stage. Internally, the Xiaomi smartphone showcases a tall display, with the central section prominently visible.

The overall design resembles that of Xiaomi’s MIX Flip foldable smartphone. The camera configuration features a slight variation, incorporating three sensors along with what appears to be an LED flash.

The power button and volume controls are situated on the right side of the device. Additionally, the USB Type-C port and speaker grille are located at the bottom.

It is important to note that this is currently just a patent, and there is no assurance that it will be released in the future. Nevertheless, it provides insight into the potential aesthetics of upcoming foldable devices and the design innovations that Xiaomi is exploring.
