Windsor Symphony Orchestra strikes chord with students

Young students from across Windsor and Essex County are discovering the world of classical music.
Continuing its educational concert series under the leadership of assistant conductor Geoffrey Larson, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra performed for 1,500 students at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday.
“Getting classical music to the kids at this younger age helps them have a greater appreciation for music later on in life,” Monica Bunde, WSO’s manager of marketing and communications, told the Star.

“It’s almost like a teaching tool for kids. They’re learning how to walk through the lobby, find their seat, sit next to somebody in a theatre, plus listen to the music and enjoy it and feel it.
“These are all life skills that they’re going to need when they become adults.”
Following the concert, students visited Art Windsor Essex for crafts and a gallery tour.
The Windsor Symphony Orchestra and Art Windsor Essex will team up once again during WSO’s education week in March.
The musical adventures continue Saturday with Carnival of the Animals, a family concert sponsored by the Solcz Family Foundation, transforming the Capitol Theatre stage into an animal kingdom.
Professional musicians will bring wild animals like lions, elephants, and kangaroos to life with their instruments.
“It’s literally like a trip to the zoo,” said Bunde, “but you’re hearing the animals noises and sounds through music.”
