The Windsor Public Library starts the new year with expanded access — adding Sunday hours at nearly all branches.

Nine library branches — all except the Local History branch — are set to open seven days a week with standardized hours of operations across all locations beginning Sunday, Jan. 5.

“We’re making access to the great services our library system provides a seven-day-a-week opportunity”, said library board chair and Ward 4 Coun. Mark McKenzie

“We know families need books, computers, and programming all week long, and this service expansion will provide that.”

The new operating hours will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all other days, including Sundays.

The Windsor Public Library board in August approved the plan to add Sunday hours at all of its branches. The union representing library workers, CUPE 2067, raised concerns at the time about how the extended hours might affect existing programming quality and public access.

Prior to the board’s approval, only three library branches operated for four hours on Sundays during the winter schedule. Library branches will now operate year-round Sunday hours, with each branch open eight hours daily.

“Our board has listened to the residents who told us they were looking for more consistency,” said McKenzie, “and we’re excited to be moving forward with these improvements.”

Standardizing operating hours are among several recent changes at the library service.

In October, the library board appointed Jennifer Knights, the city’s executive director of recreation and culture, as its new CEO.

Knights replaced interim CEO Michael Chantler, while retaining her culture portfolio at city hall, following the board’s decision to merge the library’s leadership role with the city’s culture portfolio.
