Right in time for the holiday season, and with demand for meal programs at an all-time high, Windsor-Essex residents on Sunday showed their generosity while enjoying live music.

Around 80 people attended Feeding Windsor Essex’s Beats for Eats fundraiser at the Windsor Sportmen’s Club on Sunday, raising approximately $1,500 in donations to help those facing food insecurity.

“The local bands are our biggest supporters,” said Stephanie Ferrari, an administrator at Feeding Windsor Essex.

“It’s great to have everybody come out and just be one. The holiday season is our biggest time for fundraisers, it’s a time people are most apt to help the homeless, feed the needy, and contribute in the city.”

Two local musical groups — The 519 Band and 2fish — performed during the afternoon fundraiser. Jimmy G’s Bar and Grill provided the meals.

This summer, Feeding Windsor Essex marked its 10th anniversary, and after a decade of supporting those in need, Ferrari said securing funding has become the organization’s biggest challenge.

“The rising cost of food is is getting ridiculous,” said Ferrari.

Each year, she added, the organization sees an increasing number of people relying on meal programs.

By the end of this year, she expects the organization to hit a record 200,000 meals.

“It’s more and more every year,” she said. “This year’s batting it out of the park, though.”

The next Beats for Eats event takes place Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at Lion’s Head Tavern (7880 Wyandotte St. E). A $20 ticket includes pizza and three bands, Stone Luck, British Beat 66, and The Ashlyn Lynn Experience.
