Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila on Wednesday said the Waqf Amendment Bill is an attempt to strip the religious freedom granted to the Muslims by the Constitution. “It is a conspiracy to oppress the minorities and introduction of the Bill in Parliament is a black day for the nation,” she posted on X.

Ms. Sharmila alleged that “the motive is to encroach waqf properties and hand them over to Prime Minister Modi’s associates and proxies,” she said, and slammed the “authoritarian policies of the Modi government at the Centre.”

She said it was unfortunate that the TDP and the JSP in the State were supporting the Bill. Even while promising the Muslims that he would protect waqf properties at the Iftar dinners, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu issued a whip to his MPs to support the Bill in Parliament.
