Squid Game is violent, emotional, and even comedic at times, but there are reasons behind its shock value that make this gore K-drama compelling. The infamous show about the game ‘Red Light, Green Light’, which entertained viewers worldwide took director Hwang Dong-Hyuk almost 12 years to make. And the stress of creating the Emmy-winning show was so high that he lost many teeth, ‘eight or nine’ to be specific. It is no secret that the director wants to end the show with season 3.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hwang Dong-Hyuk explained, “The desire to put a closure to the story that I began to tell arose after we worked on season 1. In terms of why I decided to end the story with season 3, I think that the story I wanted to tell came to a full closure at the end of season 3. The story that I both wanted to tell and that I am capable of telling through Gi-hun, has been told with season 3.”
Squid Game revolves around a deadly competition where contestants, who are all facing financial problems, play a series of games in an attempt to win the prize money but at the cost of their lives. In the debut season, most of the cast members were killed, and only Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-Hae, emerged as the sole survivor.
Season 2 is set to trace the life of the sole survivor, the director noted, “I wanted to tell the story of what happened to Gi-hun after where we leave him at the end of season 1 and what he does, what kind of actions he takes in order to put a stop to these games. As creator, writer, and director, it was almost my mission or my role to further tell that story. And I wanted to repay all of the love that we had received in one way or another.”
Squid Game season 2 is set to release on December 26, and its third installment is expected to premiere on Netflix by the end of next year.
