Eight boys’ teams and six girls’ teams took part in the Charger Charity Classic basketball tournament on the weekend, hosted by Centennial high school.
Playing a draw-style event on the boys’ side, the Marion Graham Falcons claimed this year’s title, securing a narrow 67-65 victory over the Moose Jaw Peacock Toilers in Sunday’s final.

Playing a draw-style event on the boys’ side, the Marion Graham Falcons claimed this year’s title, securing a narrow 67-65 victory over the Moose Jaw Peacock Toilers in Sunday’s final.
Mukungu Mutabazi scored a game-high 27 points for Moose Jaw, while Spencer Hyrcan led Marion Graham with 21.

The Falcons were the only Saskatoon-based team to make it out of the quarterfinals, defeating the Weyburn Eagles 61-36 before moving on to win 77-54 over the Prince Albert St. Mary’s Marauders in the semifinal.
Prince Albert went on to capture bronze, defeating the North Battleford Vikings 81-72.
Over on the girls’ side, Regina’s Winston Knoll Wolverines were crowned as champions following a 63-44 win over North Battleford.
Winston Knoll’s Maddie Chicoine led both teams with 22 points, while Jorja Geddes netted 17 points for the Vikings.
Both the Wolverines and the Vikings went 2-0 in round robin play to advance to the final.
The Centennial Chargers captured bronze, winning 57-48 over Prince Albert.
Three Sask players selected for U18 national women’s hockey team
Hockey Canada has announced the roster that will represent the country at the 2025 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship and it includes three Saskatchewan players.
Saskatoon forward Alida Korte and goaltender Ava Drabyk will join Prince Albert forward Stryker Zablocki when the team travels to Finland from January 4-12.

Zablocki was on the 2024 roster, helping Canada a bronze medal for Canada.
The 2025 event will feature eight teams in total, with Canada competing in Group B against Switzerland, Czechia and Slovakia, while the United States, Sweden, Finland and Japan compete in Group A.
Swift Current hosts RBC Showdown
Multiple Saskatchewan curling teams were in action at the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown, running Dec. 12-16 in Swift Current.
On the women’s side, Regina’s Michelle Englot was the lone Saskatchewan team to make it to the quarterfinals, which started Sunday morning at 11:15 a.m.
She’ll face Calgary’s Kayla Skrlik to move onto the semifinals.
Other Saskatchewan teams competing in the women’s event included Saskatoon’s Ashley Thevenot, Regina’s Jolene Campbell and Jenna Enge, as well as Moose Jaw’s Sherrilee Orsted.
Over on the men’s side, in Draw 15 played Sunday morning, Saskatoon’s Mike McEwen earned a spot in the playoffs after defeating Toronto’s John Epping 6-5 in extra ends in one of two A-side qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Saskatoon’s Dustin Kalthoff was defeated 6-4, dropping to the C-side event.

Other Saskatchewan men’s teams working to make their way to playoffs include Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock and Charley Thomas, Regina’s Kelly Knapp, Swift Current’s Steve Laycock and Kerrobert’s Drew Heidt.
Hilltops name season award winners
The Saskatoon Hilltops recently named their 2024 season award winners, with seven players picking up hardware.
