Smartwatches have been around for quite some time now. In fact, they’re now a part of the fashion culture, and many people use them not just as a gadget but also as an accessory; styling their looks in line with their watches. However, innovation is still the name of the game in the world of gadgets and tech companies are constantly in pursuit to find the next big thing.

Take for example the Humane AI-powered pin that was all the rage on the internet a few months ago, and how it was going to revolutionize the tech world and make smartphones obsolete. The AI-powered pin fell flat on its face in the end, but it gave us a glimpse as to just how far we’ve come in tech. Case in point, smart rings.

Just what is a smart ring anyway?

A smart ring is like any smart device that can be used for a number of functions. Smart rings, besides being worn as fashion accessories, can also serve as fitness and wellness trackers. The devices can be paired to a smartphone via Bluetooth and provide users with detailed insights on sleep patterns, number of steps taken throughout the day, distanced covered and more.

Smart rings also feature a heart rate sensor in them, and can give you accurate information about your heart rate at any given time in the day. There are also dedicated workout detection features in Smart rings to help you keep track of your workouts.

Why get one?

For one, smart rings look cool. There are many on the market currently, but Oura Ring 4 as well as the Galaxy Ring are some of the more popular ones. There’s a variety of color options to choose from, and you won’t really have to style your outfits to go with the rings. Secondly, a typical smart ring lasts from anywhere between 6-7 days on a single charge. They provide you with an accurate health and wellness data report, which always comes in handy.

You can just wear it as an accessory and forget about it. Charge it once a week and you’re good to go. The smart ring apps also provide you with location capabilities should you lose the ring somewhere. The Galaxy Ring, which can only be paired with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, lets you take pictures on your phone and take or end calls through gesture controls.

But what about smartwatches?

Just like their ring counterparts, smartwatches can also be paired to your smartphone via Bluetooth and also feature a dedicated app to let you use the many capabilities it offers. A typical smart watch lasts anywhere between 2-3 days on a single charge and provides you with many options such as notifications, media playback, fitness tracking etc.

You can customize your watch through various watch faces, track sleep, monitor heart rates, oxygen saturation levels, set alarms and also make phone calls etc. Smartwatches are generally also dust and water-resistant. There’s a host of different options at varying price points to choose from including the Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch as well as the Google Pixel Watch.

What should you choose?

It all depends on what you wish to get out of your investment. Should you be more inclined towards a minimalist, no-frills experience that provides you with decent fitness and sleep tracking capabilities, isn’t in a bulky form factor like a watch, and is something you can wear 24×7, the smart ring is perhaps the right choice for you.

Do note that, as I mentioned earlier, the Galaxy Ring can only be paired with a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. The Oura Ring 4, on the other hand, works with most smartphones, but you need to have a monthly Oura Membership subscription to continue using most of the important features that the ring offers. Elsewhere, there’s also been rumblings of Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi working on a ring device of their own.

On the contrary, should you be interested in a more typical tech-savvy experience that offers you most of the capabilities a smart ring can, and much more on top of that in a wristwatch form factor, by all means choose a smartwatch. Smartwatches have come a long way since they were first released. Many of them currently on the market offer cellular and 4G LTE connectivity. Dare I say, smartwatches are now more than capable of replacing your smartphone on many occasions.
