The Saskatoon high school wrestling season — which got underway with practices back in November — is taking hold for the final stretch.

Wrestlers will hit the mats for the Dual City Championships Feb. 11 -12 at E.D. Feehan Collegiate with the city league culminating on Feb. 27-28 with the Saskatoon city championships at Aden Bowman Collegiate and provincial championships March 7-8 in Regina.

Aden Bowman Bears

Head coach: Ryan Serblowski

Wrestlers to watch

  • Jordyn Erikson — 73 kg. A returning athlete this season with a lot to prove. She is a wrestler that bought into the sport at the end of last season after having a successful year, that earned her rookie of the year at Bowman. Jordyn is a smart and physical athlete on the mat and in the wrestling room.
  • Autumn Turner-Burke — 105 kg. One of the captains and is wrestling in her last season as a Aden Bowman Bear. She is a great leader and advocate for the Bowman wrestling team. With her welcoming attitude, leadership and high-level wrestling skill set she has helped grow the girls team over the last few years. She led the girls team to the most improved girls team award in 2024.

“Last year our girls team had a very successful season, both individually and as a team. Our junior and senior girls team won the most improved team award at the city championships.”

Head coach: Meagan Fabian & Dave Hilsendager

Wrestlers to watch

  • Alexis Rhine — Grade 10, 44 kg. Might be the lightest on the mat but she is definitely one of the strongest. Started the season off strong at the opening tournament, she is ready to showcase her skills and agility this season.
  • Blake Souster — Grade 10, 64 kg. Keeping the fire going from last season. Uses each practice and match as a learning opportunity to outsmart her opponents. With her growing strength and new skills, we look forward to seeing what she has to bring this season.

“This year our girls team has grown with many new rookies that are strong and driven to learn the sport. We are working to capitalize on the knowledge and passion of our seniors to continue on growing our program. We look forward to the 2024-2025 season and bringing home some hardware.”

  • Reese Kosh — Grade 11. She’s a textbook of technique. Strong and highly athletic.
  • Isabelle Ried — Grade 11. Her wrestling intelligence is unparalleled. She’s a standout competitor and an unmatched athlete.
  • Nizanna Corrigan — Grade 12. As a champion weightlifter, she balances her strength with technique making her a dominating competitor.

“The Chargers girls’ team delivered an impressive performance last year, overcoming injuries with resilience and determination. Their hard work paid off as they brought home medals from both the city and provincial championships.”

“With just three girls on the team, Nizanna, Isabelle, and Reese are determined to make a powerful impact and prove themselves as fierce competitors this year.”

  • Alexandra Pop — Grade 9. A new wrestler who is motivated to advance her skillset. She is eager to compete and challenge herself.
  • Caresse Kunder — Grade 12, Captain. A returning wrestler who is ready to demonstrate her skills. She is dedicated to being successful and challenging herself.
  • Eleanor Arnold — Grade 9. New to wrestling but is eager to learn and gain knowledge. She is strong, determined and ready to compete.
  • Emma Carmalt — Grade 11, Captain. 2nd at last year’s city championships. A motivated and skilled wrestler who is looking to get back on the podium. She is one to watch.
  • Melina Marjani — Grade 11. New to wrestling but is very driven and a fast learner. She is ready to compete.

“We have grown our girls’ team this year and aim to continue. The team has been working hard to not only create a positive environment but to also motivate each other for success. We have a younger team, but they are eager and ready to compete. The Souls look forward to demonstrating their skills and hard work.”

  • Sofia Boutin — Grade 9. Very strong wrestler.

Marion Graham Falcons

Head coach: Jared Isabelle

Wrestlers to watch

  • Sofia Kalyar — Grade 12, 50 kg. This team captain, and provincial bronze medalist is looking to battle her way atop of the provincial and city podiums again this season.
  • Alyxx Person — Grade 12, 53 kg. A team leader who is a tough and scrappy wrestler. She is looking to finish on the podium in her senior year.
  • Izzy Lee — Grade 12, 50 kg. Another team leader that is determined to wrestle tough, grind out matches and end her senior year on the city and provincial podiums.
  • Avery Clatney — Grade 11, 50 kg. The defending provincial and city champion and she is looking to defend her titles this season. Keep your eye on this explosive athlete, as she ends matches quickly.

  • Taryn McKay — Grade 12, 50 kg. Has been in the Top-4 every year, and hopes to take a top spot this year.
  • Natalie Heggstrom — Grade 12, 90 kg. Looking to repeat last year when she had a perfect season winning cities and provincials.

“We are a young team with few athletes. We hope can surprise people at cities. Our goal for this team is to be in the Top-4 again.”

  • Jill Roxas — Grade 12, 47 kg. Looking to defend her city and provincial titles.
  • Elaine King — Grade 11, 50 kg. She is looking to add more city and provincial titles to her name.
  • Mikayla Keats — Grade 11, 53 kg. After medaling at all major championships last year, she is looking to make her way to the top of the podium.
  • Meghan Harvey — Grade 11, 64 kg. Looking to defend her city title.
  • Meagan Summers — Grade 10, 56 kg. She is looking to defend her city and provincial title.

“The Marauder girls wrestling team had a very successful season. We qualified for Dual City Championships where we finished second in the city. We won the junior and senior city championships. At city championships, along with our 5A girls division city title we had eight girls win individual medals, four of which were Gold. At Provincial championships we placed second in the province overall.

“Shout out to our individual medalists: Bronze Medalists: Makenna Byers, Julia Colborne, and Perry Poncelet. Silver Medalists: Elaine King. Gold Medalists: Jill Roxas, and Meagan Summers.”

“Our Marauder girls wrestling team made a statement last year. After a narrow second place finish at provincials, we are looking to bring home that banner.”

Aden Bowman Bears

Head coach: Ryan Serblowski

Wrestlers to watch

  • Shenuka Ranasinghe — 56 kg. A strong silent leader that leads through his actions on the mat and in the wrestling room. His work ethic and attention to detail make him a dangerous opponent in any wrestling situation. He is looking to pick up where he left off from last season and earn a spot on the provincial podium in March.
  • Liam Mescal — 82 kg. One of the team captains and has been wrestling in the green and gold for 3 seasons now. He is a very competitive young man that is always finding ways to improve with every rep. Liam has a team first attitude where he makes those around him better at practice and competitions. Look out for him to shake up the 82 kg weight class this season.

“Last year was a competitive season of wrestling for our boys team. We had a lot of individual successes at different times throughout the year, but in the team standings we couldn’t find that rhythm in the city championships.”

  • Maxson Nguyen — Grade 10, 53 kg. Last season he dominated the mat, winning junior cities, city championships, and provincial championships in his weight class.
  • Liam Hunter — Grade 12, 77 kg. Has made strides in his wrestling abilities. With his determination and drive to improve his skills, we look forward to seeing him shine this season.
  • Christian Skutelnik — Grade 12, 115 kg. Last season he medaled at cities and wrestled at provincials. This year he has stepped up his game, giving it his all each practice and match.
  • Keaton Armstrong — Grade 10, 100 kg. He showed strong potential in his rookie year last year. With a strong start this season, being undefeated in the opening tournament, we hope to see this momentum caring on throughout the season.

“Our boys team made significant improvements from the previous year. Our junior boys won most improved at junior cities, and our boys dual team got 5th in championships, and many of our wrestlers represented us at provincials.”

  • Max Kershaw — Grade 12. An elite wrestler who routinely competes at university tournaments. He has incredible technique, great agility, and wrestles on instinct.
  • Bryson Mckenzie-Haineault — Grade 12. He’s physically strong, precise and strategic.
  • Arman Asyran — Grade 10. A first-year wrestler who competes like an experienced elite. He’s all athleticism and technique.
  • Eric Thomson — Grade 9. A first-year wrestler whose physical strength makes him a dominating force.

“The Chargers boys team competed well last year at both the city and provincial championships with Max Kershaw winning gold at both cities and provincials.”

Expectations for this season

“This year we gained a lot of new talent and strong competitors on the team. The team has many Grade 9s and 10s, so we are looking to our few seniors to provide leadership and guidance to build up a strong team for next year.”

  • Zach Heiser — Grade 12. Exemplifies drive and determination, combining speed, tenacity, and technical precision on the mat. As a leader at practices and meets, he consistently pushes himself and others to excel, taking the initiative to mentor teammates and refine new techniques. His relentless work ethic and commitment set the tone for the team’s success.
  • Tyrin Swiftwolfe — Grade 12. His ability to learn quickly and adapt with each practice and meet have led to consistent improvement, fueling his pursuit of excellence. His work in the weight room in the off season has paid off in speed and agility on the mat. Determined to secure a podium finish after two consecutive years making the provincial team, Tyrin’s ambition and hard work are driving him toward achieving his goals.

“We are a young team with a bounty of potential, driven by determination and a strong work ethic to improve with every practice. Our novice wrestlers are already showing growth on the mat, showcasing their raw talent and dedication. “This is our first year with a wrestling program. Enzo finished third last year in junior cities with the Aden Bowman program. We are lucky enough to have a partnership through SHSAA and SSSAD to have Enzo train with Ryan Serblowski at Aden Bowman.”

“Continue to improve and enjoy the opportunity to wrestle.”

Evan Hardy Souls

  • Abir Hossain — Grade 10. A returning wrestler who has a strong skill set and a high level of determination. He is one to watch as he competes to succeed.
  • Arnold Whittet — Grade 12, Captain. 5th at last year’s city championships. Helps to motivate his teammates. He is driven and ready to continue challenging himself in his final year as he looks to medal.
  • Burhan Syed Muhammad — Grade 10. A quick learner with the skills to compete at a high level. He is motivated and setting his standards high.
  • Davis Guo — Grade 12. Although he is new to wrestling in Grade 12, he has become a standout wrestler. He is a hard worker and a good teammate.
  • Dominic Lukan — Grade 12, Captain. 4th at last year’s city championships. A leader who works to challenge himself and his teammates. He is motivated and is looking to return to the podium.
  • Rogan Pasher — Grade 11. A motivated wrestler who is explosive, skilled and ready to compete.

  • Josh Wiens — Grade 12, 62 kg. A silky-smooth wrestler. Look for him to be competing for a podium spot by the end of the season.
  • Pascal Lavertu — Grade 10, 41 kg. The defending provincial and city champion, who is looking for a repeat performance from last season. A tough wrestler who knows how to wear his competition down.
  • Matias Munoz — Grade 10, 50 kg. The defending provincial and city champion, who is looking to repeat with both titles. Keep your eye on this scrappy wrestler.

  • Carlos Yahyahkeekoot — Grade 12. Has done MMA in the past and getting his first taste of high school wrestling.
  • Jadyn Crowe — Grade 12. Played football and is looking for more opportunities to make the most in Grade 12 year.
  • Tyler Mowat — Grade 11. Wrestled in the past but has not done so in a few years. Looking forward to getting back on the mats.
  • Nathan Peters — Grade 9. Doing everything he can to be involved with Mustang Athletics.

  • Michale Dafe — Grade 12, 110 kg. Second year wrestler hoping to improve on 2nd place finish in cities last year. Incredible strength and technique improvement from last year.
  • Ugumsy Maledo — Grade 12, 90 kg. Demonstrates strong leadership in the room and will help to represent St. Joseph well this season.
  • Yuel Kebrom — Grade 12, 69 kg. Looking to improve on a heartbreaking 3rd place finish last year. Practices hard at the school and at Junior Huskies.
  • Javier Johnson — Grade 12, 130 kg. Rookie wrestler who brings a lot of size and athleticism to the heavyweight category, looking to make an impact in the city championship.

  • Wynn Griffith — Grade 11, 52 kg. He is looking to add more city and provincial titles.
  • Dylan Dearing — Grade 10, 65 kg. After medaling at junior and senior city championships last year, he is looking to make his way to the top of the podium.

“Last year the Walter Murray Marauders Boys wrestling team was a dominant team both in the junior and senior divisions. We had medalists at all major championships and finished second at Junior Cities and Senior Cities. We finished our season at provincial championships where we also placed second in the province.

“The Marauder boys’ wrestling team is young and mighty this year. We had a large group of Grade 12s that graduated last year, and we are looking to develop our junior team. Despite being young, we still have the numbers and the talent to make a run for each team championship again this season.
