Low-hazard fireworks — roman candles, sparklers, fountains, wheels, volcanoes, mines and snakes — are designed for recreational use and travel less than 50 metres above the ground.

In Saskatoon, they can be set off on private property between dusk on Tuesday and 12:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

High-hazard fireworks are meant for professionals and can only be purchased by whose who holder a fireworks supervisor card, which is issued by Natural Resources Canada.

Carefully read the instructions before setting off fireworks, and choose the location wisely. It should be free of overhead obstructions and a safe distance from combustible material or as spectators.

Fireworks should not be used in windy conditions. Except for hand-held sparklers, they should not be lit and fired from a person’s hands. Never try to relight a firework that didn’t go off.

“Have a supply of water available and use it to extinguish debris or smouldering embers before they cause injuries, property damage and/or fires,” the fire department said in a news release, adding that users are solely responsible for any debris that lands on spectators or other people’s property.
