Samsung’s forthcoming Z Flip clamshell-style foldable device is expected to feature an innovative ear speaker designed to enable users to answer calls discreetly, even when the device is closed. At present, users of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 can only respond to calls through the phone’s external speaker while it remains folded, which compromises privacy and necessitates opening the device to take calls confidentially.

Reports indicate that Samsung and LG are collaborating on a novel solution aimed at overcoming this limitation, thereby allowing for increased space for other smartphone components.

As reported by the Korean news outlet Sisa Journal, Samsung is partnering with LG to create a new type of display intended to replace the conventional ear speaker found in all smartphones.

This initiative primarily targets foldable devices, particularly clamshell models that currently require full opening to facilitate private call answering.

The display under development is said to utilize piezoelectric technology, which would enable the screen to vibrate and generate sound. This technology is anticipated to effectively substitute the traditional ear speaker typically located behind the hole-punch displays of modern smartphones.

This piezoelectric speaker, as detailed in the report, will be integrated into the display in layers, eliminating the need for any supplementary equipment.

The fusion of these two components is expected to minimize the requirement for a dedicated ear speaker, which typically occupies space behind the display at the top of the smartphone. This innovation will create additional room for other components, a significant advantage given the spatial constraints commonly encountered in most clamshell foldable devices.

Researchers indicate that the incorporation of this speaker technology into the cover display facilitates two separate audio sources, enabling users to place their ear directly on the cover display to answer calls privately for the first time.

The application of piezoelectric technology is not a recent development. Xiaomi’s Mi Mix was the pioneer in introducing this technology in a commercially available smartphone back in 2016.

This device, which was exclusively sold in China, utilized a piezoelectric acoustic ceramic earpiece speaker along with an ultrasonic proximity sensor, moving away from the conventional front-facing infrared sensor in its pursuit of a bezel-less design, particularly at the top of the smartphone.
