The Union government’s ‘PM Vishwakarma scheme’ was rolled out only because “a group in Delhi” could not bear the idea that students from Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, and the oppressed sections of society were getting educated, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said in Chennai on Sunday.

Speaking during a function at the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, Mr. Udhayanidhi underlined the contribution of Christian schools in providing education. “However, today, one group in Delhi is advocating that our children should not study but should take up kula kalvi. You all know who I am referring to. Those who said this several years ago are now at it again,” he said.

Mr. Udhayanidhi further said, “They could not bear the idea that students from Backward and Most Backward Classes and the oppressed sections of society are getting educated and coming up.” On the other hand, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was implementing several initiatives aimed not only at encouraging students to go to school but to pursue higher education also, he said.

“But, in Delhi, they are planning on how to send our students away from schools. They have rolled out the ‘Vishwakarma scheme’. This scheme is just kula kalvi again. It promotes the idea that one should get into a profession that their father and grandfather did. The scheme’s only objective is to send our students from schools,” he quipped.

The Chief Minister has made it clear that the Tamil Nadu government would not implement the PM Vishwakarma scheme, Mr. Udhayanidhi said, and called for cooperation for various initiatives of the State government aimed at promoting education and sports activities among students.
