A parked car went up in flames creating a plume of dark smoke over a Barrie parking lot.

On Friday, just after 2 p.m. Barrie Fire responded to a vehicle fire in the Bryne Drive parking lot in Barrie.

Asst. Deputy fire chief Eric McFadden, said he was at a plaza right beside Bryne Drive at the time of the blaze, when he witnessed black smoke lingering in the sky.

Officials say the fire started in the engine of a grey Volkswagen Jetta but they are not sure what caused the blaze.

Barrie Fire says the team was able to put out the scorching flames quick enough, standing down the arrival of a second fire truck.

The damage of the vehicle is left undetermined.
