Apple appears to be developing a tangible counterpart to the well-known eye-dropper tool utilized in image editing applications, allowing users to select a color by tapping the Apple Pencil on an existing image.

In 2019, the company filed a patent for an Apple Pencil that could feature “an on-board display” to showcase various colours, enabling users to preview the color of the pen or brush stroke prior to application.

In 2023, Apple submitted another patent that seems to be a logical progression from the previous concept.

The proposal titled “Electronic Device With Optical Sensor For Sampling Surfaces” suggests that the tip of the Pencil could detect colors. This patent has since been granted, and while it reiterates some aspects of the earlier patent regarding colour selection, it now provides more detailed specifications.

The primary innovation lies in the ability to press the stylus tip against any colour to identify and replicate it, irrespective of its location.

According to Apple, “The coloir sensor may be used to sample the color of the surface of an external object.” This functionality extends beyond merely tapping the Pencil on an image displayed on an iPad screen; it also includes the capability to touch the tip against physical objects in the real world.

The colour sensor may incorporate a light detection mechanism that consists of multiple photodetectors, with each one responsible for measuring light corresponding to a distinct color channel, as stated by Apple. Additionally, the color sensor may feature a light emitter, and the light spectrum can be modified during color sensing assessments by utilizing data such as measurements of ambient light colour.

Apple explains that measurements related to texture and other aspects of the object’s appearance can also be conducted. Texture assessment may involve the use of light that interacts with the surface of the external object at oblique angles.
