Tom Cruise has never steered away from challenging himself in his roles for projects. Especially since 1986’s Top Gun, he has continued to push the limits of his body and acting, taking on his own stunts in most of his top films including Mission: Impossible.
Most recently, Cruise took on several death-defying stunts in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, including speed-flying down a mountainside as well as driving a motorcycle off a cliff and parachuting to safety. Likewise, we’ve also seen him scaling the Burj Khalifa or hanging off a plane in previous films of the franchise. Now, as the eighth Mission: Impossible film is on the horizon, director Christopher McQuarrie confirms there are more gravity-defying stunts in store for fans, one that’s almost given a heart attack to a spectator. This is no joke.
In an interview with Great Magazines, the filmmaker revealed, “We had a small screening and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack.’ And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.’”

Although McQuarrie didn’t confirm what the sequence was, some of the previous BTS glimpses hint at intense underwater action. “The training and preparation we put into this film is a culmination of all before it. From the depths, to the skies, I can’t wait to share more with you,” wrote Tom Cruise on Instagram while sharing an underwater photo with an expert by his side.
A similar video was also shared on the official Instagram page of Mission: Impossible.
The eighth film in the franchise, ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ is set to hit the theatres in May 2025.
