Tech giant Meta, which owns social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram as well as Threads, are planning to release an updated version of their smart glasses which will reportedly offer a display that can showcase notifications as well as responses from the company’s artificial intelligence model Meta AI. The current iteration, built in collaboration with Ray Ban, features a host of connected tech features.

According to the report from The Financial Times, the tech giant aims to maintain its head start in the sector as the threat of competition looms large with companies like Apple and Google also planning on entering the smart glasses segment. The company believes the platform is the next big step in tech and will eventually replace smartphones as primary tech devices.

Meta Smart Glasses: what is it?

First released in 2021, the smart glasses featured various connectivity capabilities as well as audio and video features. The second iteration was released in 2023 and boasted significant upgrades over the first generation. The glasses now feature a 12MP camera which can capture photos as well as record video. There’s various connectivity features on offer as the glasses can connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth. The glasses also play audio through discreet speakers. There’s also a dedicated app.

The glasses also offer heavy AI integration with Meta AI, which can translate text in real time, identify music, and even capture photos and videos. Users can toggle the AI features with a ‘Hey Meta’ voice command. The smart glasses offer up to 36 hours of battery life with the charging case.

According to the report, Meta could release the glasses as early as the latter part of 2025. With other tech companies looking towards the sector as a potential avenue for wearable devices as well as fashionable tech, Meta wants to be ahead of the competition by seemingly offering users a chance to feel like Tony Stark in the Marvel movies.

The report also mentions Meta accelerated the development of Orion prototype glasses which feature a ‘lightweight design and 3D capabilities’, which could help enhance AR features, following ‘positive responses from testers’. Could the smart glasses be the production-ready Orion glasses? Not really as it could still take years for the Orion concept to develop, but the new glasses could offer a glimpse of what we can expect from the Orion glasses in the future.

It’s also worth noting that smart glasses aren’t a novel concept. Google had earlier revealed their own design for a smart glass called Google Glass. The prototype was unveiled in 2013 and while it didn’t have as much of an impact as the company wanted, it did set a precedent for the technology. Meta Smart Glasses currently retail for around $300 and are available in a host of color options and lens types, including prescription.
