McLaren Automotive is deeply focused on Formula One, a sentiment that extends beyond its current lead in the constructor standings. On October 6, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its inaugural F1 constructor’s championship, which was secured by driver Emerson Fittipaldi, the British marque unveiled its latest supercar, the W1.

Fittipaldi also clinched the driver’s championship in 1974, while McLaren last achieved the team championship title in 1998. The W1, which serves as the successor to the McLaren F1 from the 1990s and the McLaren P1 from the mid-2010s, is priced starting at US$2.1 million.

The W1 is part of a recent influx of vehicles, such as the Bentley Continental GT and Lamborghini Revuelto, that harness electricity to deliver impressive power while still incorporating internal combustion engines, reflecting the ongoing uncertainty regarding consumer preferences for fully electric vehicles (EVs).

This model boasts an extraordinary output of 1,258 brake horsepower and 988 pound-feet of torque, thanks to its innovative hybrid powertrain, which integrates a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 internal combustion engine with an electric motor. This synergy positions the W1 as the most powerful McLaren ever produced.

In comparison to the 671-horsepower Artura, which provides a range of 31 kilometers on electric power alone, the W1 is limited to less than 3 kilometers of electric-only driving.

The onboard charger can replenish the electric motor in just 22 minutes. However, despite previous statements from company executives suggesting the development of electric powertrains, a fully electric vehicle remains a distant goal for the brand.
