Madelyn Eybergyn continues to shine in her new specialty.
The former high jumper, who turned to distance running last year, won a bronze medal in the women’s 8km race on Saturday at the U Sports cross-country championships in Kelowna, B.C. on Saturday.
Eybergyn became the first female member of the Windsor Lancers to finish on the podium since Stef Smith won bronze in 2015 and earned first-team all-Canadian honours in the process.

Ebergyn, who captured the gold medal at the OUA championships, finished Saturday’s race in 27 minutes and two seconds, which was just 31 seconds behind the winner.
On the men’s side, Jacob Fitzpatrick was the top Lancers with a 29th-place performance in the 8km race in a time of 24:13 with teammate Luke Mawhinney in 34th place in 24:20.
Saints host nationals
The St. Clair Saints’ Carter Free finished 11th in the men’s 8km race at the CCAA cross-country championships, which were held at Malden Park on Saturday.
Free finished the race in 25 minutes and 39 seconds and Saints put four runners in the top 62 to finish ninth in the team competition.
On the women’s side, Victoria Horrobin led the way for St. Clair with a 31st-place finish in 25:19 over the 6km course. With four runners in the top 85, the Saints finished 12th in the team competition.
Spitfires hit podium
All three members of the Windsor Spitfires reached the podium on Saturday as the World Under-17 Hockey Championship wrapped up in Sarnia.
Forward J.C. Lemieux opened the scoring and also drew an assist to assist to lead Canada White to a 3-1 win over Canada Red in the gold-medal final of the tournament.

Lemieux finished the tournament with two goals and seven points in five games with Spitfire teammate Ethan Belchetz also winning gold with Canada White while scoring four goals and finishing with five points in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Spitfires’ defenceman Carter Hicks won a silver medal playing for Canada Red.
Flyers blank King
Goalie Marcus Vandenberg made 36 saves to earn the shutout as the Leamington Flyers blanked the King Rebellion in Ontario Junior Hockey League play on Sunday.
It was the third shutout in five games for the Flyers and the third of the season for Vandenberg. Anthony Ciaramitaro’s power-play goal in the third period provided the winning margin for the Flyers (19-2-2-1) against the Rebellion (7-12-1-3).
Admirals take two
The Amherstburg Admirals scored a pair of wins in Bill Stobbs Division play in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.
Goalie Russell Vaughan made 31 saves to lead the Admirals to a 1-0 win over the Wheatley Sharks on Sunday. Allan Djordjevic had the game’s lone goal for the Admirals (8-7-1-2) against the Sharks (9-8-0-0).

On Saturday, Brett Jones, Jake Goudreault and Djordjevic had single goals for he Admirals in a 3-1 win over the Dresden Kings (5-12-0-0).
Meanwhile, Patrick McManus had two goals and five points and Austin Guevremont also scored twice as the Essex 73’s beat the Mooretown Flags 7-3.
William Claridge, Karson Beuglet and Gabe Piccolo added single goals for the first-place 73’s (15-1-0-0) against the Flags (8-7-2-1).
Lancer basketball sweep
The Windsor Lancers women’s basketball team made it four OUA wins in a row with an 82-66 win over the previously unbeaten McMaster Marauders on Saturday at the Toldo Centre. The men also beat McMaster by a 95-75 count.
For the women, Mya Iriah had 16 points to lead the Lancers (4-2) with Kali Grootenboer adding 14 points and Julia Chiarot chipping in with 12 points against McMaster (5-1).
For the men, Yohann Sam had 23 points for the Lancers (2-4) while Emanuel Otong finished with 21 points and Simeon Smith contributed 19 points against the Marauders (0-6).
McMullen scores twice
Keegan McMullen scored a pair of goals to help the Windsor Lancers to a 4-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA men’s hockey play on Saturday at the Capri Complex.

The Lancers (5-5-0-0), who have won three games in a row, got single goals from Alex Cunningham and Brady Hinz against the Golden Hawks (2-6-2-0).
Saints basketball sweep
The St. Clair Saints men’s basketball team remained unbeaten in OCAA play after a 98-72 road win over Conestoga Condors on Saturday while the women’s team beat Conestoga 46-28.
For the men, Amari Frye had 21 points for the Saints (5-0) with Kyle Brown-Fazekas adding 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jacob Masters had 12 points while Ahmad Khazaleh finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds and Darnelle Peddie chipped in with 10 points against Condors (2-4).
For the women, Kaelyn Batten finished with 22 points to lead the Saints (2-2) against the Condors (1-4).
