More than 140 brave souls took the icy cold plunge Thursday during LaSalle’s first Polar Plunge, raising more than $51,000 for Special Olympics.

Under massive lights set up in a parking lot, hundreds of people cheered LaSalle police and fire personnel, town officials and regular citizens as they jumped into a pool of frigid water behind the LaSalle Landing event centre on Front Road.

Jumpers included LaSalle Mayor Crystal Meloche and Police Chief Michael Pearce.

To those unaware of how much fun he was having, LaSalle Police Chief Michael Pearce’s expression seems to scream: ‘Why did I agree to do this?’ His reaction came after his freezing jump for a great cause during the LaSalle Polar Plunge for Special Olympics on Thursday. Participants raised money by pledging to plunge into the freezing waters.

Fundraising for LaSalle’s Polar Plunge far exceeded the event’s goal of $10,000, with more pledges still coming in by press time Friday.

And if you missed the plunge or you just can’t get enough of people hurling themselves into freezing-cold water, don’t despair.

The 11th annual Windsor-Essex Polar Plunge is scheduled for Feb. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m., outside the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre in downtown Windsor.

Windsor-Essex law enforcement are partnering with St. Clair College to host the Windsor event, with a fundraising goal of $80,000.

More than 200 brave participants are expected to take an icy dip in Windsor next month.

Proceeds from annual Polar Plunges across Ontario provide support and programming for 23,000 Special Olympics athletes in the province.
