Lakeshore figure skaters shine in holiday showcase

Axels, camel spins, and jumps were more than enough to captivate the crowd of about 100 people who attended the recent Skate Lakeshore Winter Gala held at the Atlas Tube Recreation Centre.

Solo performers and synchronized groups — around 80 figure skaters total — had the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of a live audience, many for the first time, as they prepared for future competitions this season.

“It’s great too for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, to be able to come and see what their skaters have been working so hard on all year,” said Danielle Stuebing, a member of Skate Lakeshore’s board of directors.

“It’s also a chance for the girls to put on costumes and makeup to perform their routines.”

The Dec. 21 showcase featured routines from three of the club’s Silver Stars synchronized teams, along with solo performances by skaters ranging in age from five to 60.

“This is their first performance with their new outfits and makeup,” said Jenn Woodrich, Skate Lakeshore head coach. “It makes the skaters feel good.”

All of this builds excitement as Skate Lakeshore prepares to host its very first Provincial Series competition on Feb. 14 to 16.

Competitors from all over the province, ranging from Star 5 level and above, will take to the ice for the event.

“We’re really excited and proud to be able to host this because some of our girls will be competing,” said Stuebing, “but it also gives our local skaters an opportunity to see some of these elevated performances and what they can aspire to achieve as well.”

Hosting the competition is a promising sign for the club of around 500 members.

“We’re still a small club, but we’re growing,” said Woodrich. “Every year we just push our envelope a little bit more.”
