Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal will declare Kollam a garbage-free district on Monday as part of the ‘Malinya Muktham Navakeralam’ campaign. Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development J. Chinchurani will present the awards to the local bodies that performed well in waste management. MPs N.K. Premachandran and Kodikunnil Suresh; MLAs Kovoor Kunjumon, G.S. Jayalal, M. Mukesh, P.C. Vishnunath, P.S. Supal, C.R. Mahesh, and Dr. Sujith Vijayan Pillai will present the awards for green schools, colleges and other institutions. MLA M. Noushad will preside over the function while District Collector N. Devidas and district panchayat president P.K. Gopan will also attend.
The ‘Malinya Muktham Navakeralam’ (Waste-Free New Kerala) campaign, launched by the State government had commenced on October 2, 2024, Gandhi Jayanti, and concluded on March 30, 2025, International Zero Waste Day.
As a result of the five-phase campaign, all schools, colleges, and institutions in the district have been made waste-free. Additionally, 20 tourist and pilgrimage centres and all neighbourhood groups in the district have achieved green status. Furthermore, 162 junctions and 73 public spaces have been made waste-free and beautified.
