‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ to be Todd Phillips’ last DC film? Director responds

Director Todd Phillips confirms his time with the DC Universe is up after Joker 2. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the musical sequel picks up the Batman enemy’s origin story right where it left off in the first installment. Abused and increasingly enraged Arthur Fleck was a tragic nightmare, a mentally sick clown suffering from a neurological condition that breaks him into screeching laughter at inopportune moments. He goes on a killing spree after being bullied and also shoots a TV host during a live telecast.

Joker 2 brings to DC fans the aftermath of the chaos Arthur inflicted on Gotham City. Detained in the psychiatric asylum of Arkham Hospital, he awaits the proceedings of his criminal case dubbed the “Trial of the Century.” The DC film also introduces Lady Gaga as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel aka Harley Quinn, who falls deeply in love with Arthur’s wild persona as Joker.

Now, two films later director Todd Phillips is not interested in making a third installment in the Joker saga or giving Lady Gaga’s Quinn a separate film. “It’s not really where this movie is headed for me. I feel like my time in the DC Universe was these two films,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

In a separate interview with Variety, Phillips previously addressed the potential for a Gaga standalone film in the DC Universe. “For me, I’ve always thought these two (Joker) movies kind of exist as their own thing. And, no. I know you’re trying to get the next thing, but I don’t want to go into that.”

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ hit the theatres on October 2.
