Apple’s standard iPhone 17, set to launch next year, is anticipated to incorporate a display with an enhanced refresh rate, potentially introducing “ProMotion” technology to the base model of Apple’s flagship iPhone series for the first time.

A Chinese leaker known as Digital Chat Station, active on Weibo, reported over the weekend that supply chain materials support the speculation regarding a higher refresh rate display for the standard iPhone 17.

While the leaker did not specify a particular hertz (Hz) rating, earlier reports have indicated that Apple may implement a 120Hz refresh rate, which has traditionally been reserved for the Pro versions of its iPhone lineup. It is expected that Apple will utilize low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels across all iPhone 17 models, a technology that facilitates ProMotion due to its enhanced power efficiency.

In contrast, the current iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus utilize low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels, which are limited to a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz.

ProMotion technology allows for refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, enabling features such as always-on functionality at the lower end, which includes always-on time, widgets, and notifications on the Lock Screens of Pro models. At the higher end, the 120Hz refresh rate provides smoother scrolling and video playback.

Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants has asserted that both the standard iPhone 17 and a more streamlined version, referred to as the “iPhone 17 Air,” will feature ProMotion technology.

With all four iPhone models expected to adopt ProMotion displays by 2025, the higher refresh rates will no longer serve as a distinguishing feature for the Pro models. More significantly, this transition will mark the end of 60Hz displays in Apple’s flagship lineup, a standard that many other premium smartphone manufacturers have already moved beyond.
