Next year’s iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are expected to maintain a titanium chassis, similar to the current Pro models, despite claims that Apple will switch to aluminum for its 2025 lineup, according to the Weibo leaker known as “Instant Digital.”

Recently, Wayne Ma from The Information reported that the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models would be the first high-end iPhones to feature an aluminum frame since the differentiation between Pro and non-Pro models began.

Historically, premium iPhone models utilized stainless steel frames until the introduction of the titanium chassis with the iPhone 15 Pro, which was marketed as a significant enhancement. However, Ma suggests that Apple intends to revert the entire iPhone 17 lineup to aluminum, reports MacRumors.

Instant Digital, however, contests this assertion, stating, “Of course the iPhone 17 Pro will still use titanium. Why would anyone believe it would switch to aluminum? Think about it — it’s just not possible.” The leaker further emphasized that Apple has consistently highlighted the premium materials used in the Pro series, ranging from ‘surgical-grade stainless steel’ to ‘titanium,’ making a transition to aluminum difficult to market.

While it remains uncertain whether the Weibo leaker possesses supply chain insights to substantiate their claim, the argument presented lacks substantial evidence.

The proposed shift to aluminum is part of a broader design overhaul, which includes an aluminum upper back featuring a “rectangular camera bump made of aluminum rather than traditional 3D glass,” while the lower half of the device’s back would still utilize glass to facilitate wireless charging.

Additionally, Apple has a history of promoting innovative iPhone features only to eliminate them in subsequent models; for instance, 3D Touch was introduced with the iPhone 6s in 2015 as a groundbreaking method for interaction through pressure-sensitive gestures like Peek and Pop.

The iPhone 17 series is anticipated to be released in the fall, following the usual schedule. It is expected to feature new display sizes, a speculated ultra-thin model, ProMotion displays throughout the entire lineup, among other enhancements.
