Recent assessments conducted by DxOMark have yielded unexpected findings regarding the iPhone 16 Pro Max in relation to its Chinese rivals, such as the vivo X100 Pro, Xiaomi 14 Ultra, and Huawei Pura 70 Ultra.

Historically, Apple has been at the forefront of smartphone photography; however, the latest evaluations indicate that Chinese manufacturers have made remarkable advancements, particularly in telephoto and ultrawide photography. In terms of telephoto performance, DxOMark observed that the Chinese devices captured greater detail, particularly in long-distance images.

Models like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and vivo X100 Pro demonstrated superior capabilities in maintaining accurate skin tones and minimizing noise. Conversely, the images produced by the iPhone 16 Pro Max exhibited higher levels of noise and less defined details.

DxOMark presented a graph illustrating detail retention in zoomed images captured with telephoto lenses. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra excelled at lower zoom levels, whereas the vivo and Xiaomi devices surpassed the iPhone 16 Pro Max at higher zoom levels.

This performance disparity is linked to the iPhone’s low-resolution (12MP) 5x periscope telephoto lens. Beyond a 5x zoom, the device begins to crop into the sensor, resulting in a significant decline in detail. In contrast, the 50MP telephoto sensors of vivo and Xiaomi preserve sharpness and clarity even at greater zoom distances.

In the realm of ultrawide photography, the iPhone 16 Pro Max once again fell short in performance. The images produced exhibited softer details and a more pronounced level of noise, particularly when juxtaposed with the sharper outputs from Huawei and vivo devices.

Although the ultrawide images captured by the Xiaomi 14 Ultra displayed a degree of oversaturation, they nonetheless preserved greater detail than those taken with the iPhone.
