Honor is in the process of developing an innovative foldable technology that would facilitate the creation of a device equipped with a multi-directional foldable display. Information regarding this technology has emerged from a patent document that outlines the operational mechanics of such a device.

At this time, it remains uncertain whether Honor intends to introduce a device utilizing this technology in the future. While smartphones featuring clamshell and book-style folding screens have gained significant popularity, Huawei recently unveiled the first tri-fold smartphone, with other companies, including Honor, anticipated to follow this trend.

A recent patent document identified by 91Mobiles illustrates the functionality of Honor’s multi-directional foldable phone, which incorporates various components that work in unison, including multiple hinge mechanisms, several housings for smaller elements, and a central piece that connects these components.

The hinge mechanisms referenced are situated on the rear side of the foldable screen, as detailed in the patent documentation. Positioned centrally, these hinges allow the attached displays to fold along multiple axes, contingent upon the number of hinges present.

Honor has proposed the incorporation of a singular connecting element at the center of the device, which links all the hinge mechanisms. This design primarily facilitates folding along two axes—its width and length—thereby offering the advantages of a compact clamshell-style foldable while also enabling a larger display when required, akin to a book-style folding phone.

To ensure the device maintains both flexibility and durability, Honor’s patent outlines the use of materials such as rubber, fiber, or metal.

Additionally, it recommends specific designs for the central connecting element and the housings for various components to safeguard the structural integrity of the device.
