‘Harry Potter’ star Maggie Smith aka Professor Minerva McGonagall passes away at 89

Veteran actor Dame Maggie Smith, who played the beloved character of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the ‘Harry Potter‘ series, is no more. The Oscar-winning actress died today (September 27). She was 89.

Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said in a statement that she died in a hospital. She was surrounded by people who loved her. In a statement issued through publicist Clair Dobbs, they said, “An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days,” the statement added.

Apart from her role in the ‘Harry Potter‘ movies, Smith was known for playing the dowager Countess of Grantham in ‘Downton Abbey‘, a role that she pulled off effortlessly. Some of her other films include ‘Othello‘, ‘Travels with My Aunt‘, ‘A Room with a View‘, ‘Gosford Park‘, ‘Death on the Nile‘, ‘Hook‘, ‘The Secret Garden‘, ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel‘, and ‘The Lady in the Van‘. In 1969, she won the best actress Oscar for ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie‘ and in 1978, she won the Oscar for best supporting actress for ‘California Suite‘.

Fans are mourning her death. Many took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and reacted to the sad news.
