When Gyeongseong Creature first hit Netflix, it took us to 1945 as the Japanese imperial army was rushing to destroy the evidence of a lethal human experiment. As snow fell on the remote landscape of the Japanese occupying force known as Manchuria, corpses were thrown into piles to be burned. Prisoners were shot as men in uniforms prepared to set the entire complex ablaze.
They took what is needed to continue the work and set off to another corner of the Japanese empire: Gyeongseong, the city we know today as Seoul. In this horrific setting, inspired by the real-life crimes of chemical warfare division Unit 731, the show focused on monsters, born of human experimentation, designed to be used as weapons. There in the laboratory emerged a dangerous fight led by Chae-ok (Han So-hee) and Tae-sung (Park Seo-joon) against a man-made monster. But the end of season 1 left viewers with plenty of question marks.
Chae-ok’s resurrection occurred in an infested state confirming she survived the events of the debut season. But what came across as shocking was the end credit scene, where a man opens a window in a setting of modern-day Seoul. The character Ho-jae makes an entrance with Tae-sang’s face leaving audiences wondering if he is a descendant of Tae-sang or a lookalike?
While reacting to viral fan theories in an interview with Netflix, Park Seo-joon revealed when he first read the script of season 2 even he felt Ho-jae could be Tae-sang’s descendant “I thought he might be a third-generation descendant. His appearance may be a bit different, but I can act as his descendant.” Park Seo-joon also left fans wondering what if he was playing Tae-sang’s twin?
But what has fans bugging is Ho-jae’s back wound, many believe he got the scar after a controller chip was implanted in his brain or that he could merely be a clone of Tae-sang. What do you think?
Another viral theory brought up was the scene where Chae-ok suddenly opens her eyes after she swallows her mom’s Najin. Viewers believe she could have been hibernating for years before she wakes up in 2024. Han So-hee gave a rather confusing answer, “Just because she opens her eyes doesn’t mean you can simply assume that she’s alive. Maybe she wakes up as Seong-rim (her mom), not chae-ok.”
Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee alongside other castmates also discussed if Ho-jae and Chae-ok will be on the opposite side this time around? Han So-hee dabbled into the possibility of that turning true, highlighting a scene from season 1 when Tae-sang falls asleep on Maeda’s shoulder. “Seeing that, I realized he might have feelings for Maeda,” said Han So-hee, bringing a jealousy angle to their equation.
All the answers to the viral theories will be answered when Gyeongseong Creature season 2 hits Netflix on September 27
