In a remarkable demonstration, SpaceX successfully captured the returning booster of the Starship rocket utilizing mechanical arms positioned on its launch pad. Elon Musk shared a video of the booster being secured on his social media platform, X, remarking, “The tower has caught the rocket,” as the first-stage booster made its return to the launch pad merely seven minutes post-liftoff.

The launch tower’s enormous metal arms, known as “chopsticks,” firmly grasped the 232-foot (71-meter) stainless steel booster, holding it securely above the ground.

This milestone represents the first instance in which SpaceX has retrieved a rocket booster directly on the launch pad, as opposed to employing floating ocean platforms. This engineering accomplishment received accolades from millions, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

“Congratulations! I have to admit, I rewatched the video multiple times; it’s incredible to see!” wrote Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X.

In addition to Pichai, industrialist Anand Mahindra also conveyed his admiration for Elon Musk. He shared his thoughts with Musk, stating, “This Sunday, I’m happy to be a couch potato if it means I get to watch history being made. This experiment might just represent a pivotal moment in making space travel more accessible and routine.”

Standing at an impressive height of nearly 400 feet (121 meters), the Starship was launched from southern Texas at dawn, ascending over the Gulf of Mexico. In line with its forerunners, it adhered to a comparable flight path, although earlier missions concluded in failure shortly after takeoff or upon striking the ocean.
