Google’s recent initiative aimed at combating scams, which alerts users to sophisticated schemes that imitate legitimate support services, is encountering difficulties in safeguarding the security of Gmail accounts. More than 2.5 billion Gmail users are at risk of phishing attacks, akin to the experience of Sam Mitrovic, a consultant for Microsoft solutions.

According to a report by Forbes, Mitrovic became a target of highly convincing AI-generated scam calls designed to deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive information or paying for fraudulent services.

He received a dubious notification, purportedly from Google, seeking approval for account recovery, along with a phone call from Sydney, Australia. However, Mitrovic chose to disregard the call.

A week later, another notification and phone calls occurred, during which the caller asserted that they were from Google support. Mitrovic responded to the situation in a blog post, cautioning other Gmail users about the phishing strategy that could jeopardize the security of their accounts.

He proceeded to elaborate on the intricate specifics of the incident, indicating that the fraudulent scheme entails deceptive emails or notifications urging users to verify account recovery or password reset requests that they had not initiated.

These communications deceive individuals into accessing a fraudulent login page, prompting them to input their credentials in order to report the unauthorized request.

Garry Tan, the founder of the venture capital firm and startup accelerator Y Combinator, recently shared on X about another phishing scam. In this instance, a Google support representative fabricated a situation in which a member of Tan’s family was trying to recover his account.

Google Forms, which is a complimentary online tool included in Google Workspace, is being exploited by scammers to generate documents that appear authentic and are utilized in support scams. The response sheets from users are transmitted through the official Google servers.
