Over the years, Marvel has given us some truly fantastic (see what I did there?) villains in the MCU. Right from Ultron, Baron Zemo, Hela, etc. to the overarching, infinity gauntlet wearing Thanos, there has been no shortage of compelling villains in the MCU. However, since the end of the Infinity saga, there’s been confusion surrounding who the next major threat will be. While originally it was supposed to be the time traveling villain Kang, but that idea was scrapped following actor Jonathan Majors’ legal troubles.

While Marvel has announced RDJ’s return to the MCU as Victor Von Doom aka Doctor Doom as the next big bad in the series, the reveal trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has teased another Fantastic Four adversary who could potentially be a major threat like Thanos and Doctor Doom. Yes, we’re talking about Galactus. While we don’t know if Galactus is going to be merely teased in the movie itself or if the team will actually fight him, the casting of Julia Garner as Silver Surfer certainly means we will see the villain in some capacity. With that said, let’s take a look at who Galactus actually is.
Galactus is the last remaining survivor of the previous universe
Galactus was a scientist named Galan, who was a part of the universe which existed billions of years ago before the Big Bang that led to the creation of the current universe. He was from the planet Taa, which was a utopia where the most advanced species lived. Galan warned his people of the impending doom which would wipe out the entire universe, however no one heeded his warnings.

As the universe began to disintegrate, not even the planet’s highly advanced technology could save the people. In a final attempt, he and some other scientists tried to get to the terminal point of the universe, but they all perished except Galan. Galan then fused with ‘the sentience of the universe’ as the universe crumbled. After millennia, Galactus was born.
Galactus survives by eating planets
Galactus sustains himself through devouring worlds that are rich with life. He is a being who must continuously devour worlds to survive, or else he will cease to exist. Galactus’ hunger and his sheer power make him a god-like figure in the Marvel universe who is beyond the human way of looking at life, death, morality and ethics.

Galactus also has his heralds, who are beings tasked with finding suitable worlds for Galactus to consume throughout the universe. Galactus’ heralds are beings of extreme power and include the likes of the Silver Surfer, The Human Torch, etc. and even the likes of the most powerful Marvel heroes like Doctor Strange and Thor. If that doesn’t tell you how powerful he is, nothing will.
Galactus is a being of cosmic proportions
Galactus’ near-endless power comes from the Power Cosmic. Not to mention, Galactus’ sheer size is no joke. He is several times larger than the Earth. His powers make him almost invincible with the abilities like traveling through time, reading minds across the universe, matter manipulation, energy manipulation, the power to alter or create reality, he can even resurrect the dead!
He can recreate dead worlds, he can alter his size, and he possesses vasts amount of scientific knowledge given that he’s perhaps the oldest living entity in the Marvel universe. His Mobius-strip shaped ship Taa II is the greatest source of energy in the universe, according to Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic. Galactus also possesses the Ultimate Nullifier, which is a weapon that can create and destroy not just the universe but the entire multiverse, so we know for sure that Galactus is the real deal.
With that said, this isn’t the first time Galactus is appearing in movies. He was in the original Fantastic Four movies. He appears in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer as the main villain. As seen in the trailer, he will also be appearing in the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie. It remains to be seen how the MCU treats this character, but one thing’s for sure, Galactus will probably play a major role in the MCU’s future. The Fantastic Four: First Steps releases this July starring Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
