Farmers’ leader Bayya Reddy passes away

Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) State unit president and senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader G.C. Bayya Reddy passed away in the early hours of Saturday (January 4, 2025) at a private hospital in Bengaluru, following a breathing-related complication. He was 64.

Bayya Reddy had entered Left movement through Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1981 and served as the organisation’s State president from 1987 to 1994. Over five decades, he had participated in Left movements in various capacities, particularly through farmers’ agitations. He was the Karnataka State president KPRS since 2017. He was one of the co-ordinators of the farmers’ coalition fighting against farm laws. Bayya Reddy was the State polit bureau member of CPI (M) since 1991.

Several political leaders, labour leaders and activists have condoled the passing away of Bayya Reddy, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

People can pay their last respects at the CPI (M) office, EMS Bhavan in Bengaluru, till 4 p.m. and the funeral will be at his native village Gadigavarahalli in Kolar district on Sunday (January 5, 2025) at 10 a.m., according to a release from the party.
