A wave of cold across Saskatchewan has resulted in school buses being cancelled for schools in both Saskatoon and Regina.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an extreme cold warning for southern Saskatchewan. The windchill Saskatoon and Regina, as well as numerous other communities in the province, dipped to -50C on Monday.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” Environment Canada said.

The agency said to watch for cold-related symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools sent out a notice that bus service has been cancelled for elementary school students in Saskatoon, Warman and Martensville. This cancellation also affects high school students from Martensville and Warman who get bused to Bishop James Mahoney High School, and intensive needs high school buses in Saskatoon.

Saskatoon Public Schools also noted that buses were cancelled Monday morning, and that the cancellation stretches to special services such as wheelchair transportation via bus or taxi. Schools remained open.

Regina Public Schools cancelled all transportation, including buses, light vehicles, charters and attendance matters vans.

Prairie Valley School Division said buses were cancelled Monday morning, but were expected to run in the afternoon.
