Over the past two months, the AI company has implemented a function-calling feature within its large language models (LLMs), launched an application programming interface (API) for developers, and is said to be testing a complimentary version of its AI model.
According to recent reports, the company is preparing to compete with OpenAI by developing a ChatGPT-like application. The Wall Street Journal has indicated that Musk intends to establish Grok AI as an independent product. Sources familiar with the situation have suggested that xAI may soon unveil a standalone chatbot application for Grok, akin to ChatGPT.
At present, access to Grok AI is limited to users of X (formerly Twitter) who subscribe to X Premium and Premium+. A recent report also indicated that xAI is considering the launch of a free version of its AI model, which could align with the introduction of the standalone app.
These developments, along with the API for developers, reflect Musk’s aspirations to create new revenue streams through its AI initiatives. Notably, to attract developers, the company has even introduced incentives in the form of free tokens. The overarching goal appears to be to make Grok accessible to a wider audience and to enable other software and applications to leverage its capabilities.
The WSJ report further noted that Musk’s broader objective is to challenge OpenAI and provide its products and services as a credible alternative in all areas where ChatGPT operates.

However, it is important to note that Grok currently lacks several features, including native image generation, voice support, and agentic AI capabilities, which are already offered by major competitors such as Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft.
