Carnatic vocalist and playback singer B. Arundhati and her two children Sreekant Hariharan and Charu Hariharan offered ‘Thrimadhuram’, a unique musical treat, to the people of Palakkad on the evening of Christmas on Wednesday, the fifth day of the ongoing Swaralaya Samanwayam music and dance festival.
When Arundhati said that it was for the first time that they were presenting a concert together, the crowd at the Rapadi open air auditorium burst into loud applause. They mostly stuck to classical base, but some popular film songs endeared them to the youth. While Charu excelled in mridangam, Aravind Krishna lent her support in tabla. The mixture of tabla and mridangam took some songs to a different level.
Arya Datta and Sumesh Anand too excelled in violin and keyboard respectively. Of the dozen-odd songs Arundhati and Sreekant sang, half were pure classical and the remaining semi-classical.
Mr. Sreekant gave a different feel to M.S. Baburaj’s popular song ‘Surumayezhuthiya Mizhikale’ with the backup of tabla and mridangam. Its pahadi raag left the audience nostalgic.
‘The real gods’
Writer Mundoor Sethumadhavan inaugurated the Christmas evening celebrations. Speaking on the occasion, he said that art forms were the real gods and music and dance would help one find humanity. Swaralaya felicitated neurovascular sonologist and Eumed Superspeciality Hospital chairman M. Pradeep at the function.
A 40-member choir led by T.D. Simon presented a Christmas carol, followed by a Tiruvathira performance by the Lions women’s wing.
