Currently, it is available exclusively to paid subscribers of the platform. With the new shortcut, eligible users can conveniently open the app with the web search feature activated.
The rollout of this feature for compatible iPhone and iPad models occurred without significant publicity; OpenAI did not issue any social media announcements or blog posts to draw attention to it. However, its presence was uncovered by various netizens and media outlets on Tuesday, with confirmation from the staff at Gadgets 360.
To utilize this shortcut, users of iOS and iPadOS must download and install Apple’s Shortcuts app. Once installed, they will find ChatGPT listed within the app, provided the AI application is also installed.
In the app interface, users will notice a new Open SearchGPT shortcut option, in addition to existing features such as voice conversations, quick ask, and new chat, as well as options to select specific AI models like GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini. By choosing the SearchGPT option, users can add this shortcut to their Home Screen.
Furthermore, SearchGPT can be activated through Siri on devices that have been updated to the latest iOS 18.1, enabling the virtual assistant to utilize these new capabilities. OpenAI initially introduced SearchGPT in October, promoting it as an improved method for web searching.

This feature leverages the company’s proprietary search engine, allowing the chatbot to browse the Internet and answer questions that fall outside its pre-existing knowledge base, while grounding its responses in the source material. Additionally, the chatbot provides links to all web pages referenced in its responses, enabling users to verify the information presented.
