Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo announced today that at least one model of the iPhone 17, set to launch next year, will feature a Wi-Fi 7 chip designed by Apple. Additionally, there have been longstanding rumors regarding Apple’s development of a proprietary 5G chip for its iPhones, and Kuo has offered further insights into the company’s intentions regarding this technology.

Earlier this month, 9to5Mac reported that Apple’s proprietary 5G chip would also manage Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS functionalities; however, Kuo has expressed a differing opinion.

He indicated that Apple’s 5G and Wi-Fi chips are presently distinct entities, with plans for their introduction in the iPhone 17 and other devices commencing in the latter half of 2025.

Kuo noted that these chips will be utilized in devices concurrently. If this information holds true, it negates the speculation surrounding a unified Apple chip for 5G, Wi-Fi, and other connectivity options, although such a development may still be a possibility for the future.

Kuo also mentioned that the anticipated iPhone SE 4, expected to debut in March, will feature an Apple-designed 5G modem, while relying on a Wi-Fi chip supplied by Broadcom.

“Beginning in the second half of 2025, both Apple’s 5G and Wi-Fi chips will gradually be integrated into new products at the same time,” Kuo stated in a subsequent social media update today. “However, as these are two separate chips utilizing different TSMC manufacturing processes, the initial transition timelines will vary due to distinct production schedules. For instance, the iPhone SE 4 will adopt an Apple 5G modem but will continue to utilize a Broadcom Wi-Fi chip.” Kuo anticipates that Apple’s 5G modem will be incorporated into the speculated ultra-slim iPhone 17 model.
