A recent report indicates that Apple’s intentions for a budget version of the Apple Vision Pro are now anticipated to involve the use of lower-resolution displays than initially planned. This update follows an earlier report suggesting that Japan Display Inc. (JDI) had provided Apple with a test sample of a lower-resolution display.

Apple is reportedly investigating the use of lower-resolution displays for a budget version of the Apple Vision Pro

According to Digitimes, it is now believed that Apple is evaluating displays with even lower resolutions.
Specifically, Apple had solicited bids for displays featuring a resolution of 1,700 pixels per inch (ppi) and requested that these screens be of the OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) variety, which offer greater brightness compared to the white OLED combined with color filters used in the current headset.
Previously, there were reports that Apple was contemplating the use of OLEDoS screens for a second-generation Apple Vision Pro, projected for release in 2027.
In addition to producing a sample with a reduced resolution of 1,500 ppi, JDI employed glass core substrate (GCS) OLED technology instead of OLEDoS. GCS OLED is generally more appropriate for displays intended for viewing at a standard distance, rather than for those designed to be positioned close to the eye.
Apple seems to have approved the JDI sample, despite its resolution of approximately 1,500ppi being considerably lower than that of the current Apple Vision Pro. The original headset boasts a resolution of about 3,380ppi, which Apple describes as comparable to a 4K television for each eye.
According to Digitext, there is speculation that Samsung Display (SDC) is also expected to manufacture GCS OLED screens with a resolution of around 1,500ppi.
It is important to note that Digitimes has a reliable history regarding its supply chain information, although its predictions concerning Apple’s strategies have been less dependable.
