Apple plans to launch an upgraded version of the AirTag in the first half of 2025. This will represent the first significant update to Apple’s tracking device since its debut in 2021, as reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

Gurman suggests that the forthcoming model will be equipped with a more sophisticated chip, likely the second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, which has recently been incorporated into the iPhone 15.
This enhanced technology is anticipated to improve the precision of the AirTag’s location tracking capabilities. The current AirTag utilizes Apple’s U1 chip, which combines UWB technology with Bluetooth to interface with Apple’s Find My network, allowing users to accurately locate their devices.
Its compact and lightweight stainless-steel design offers IP67 water and dust resistance, providing a degree of protection against environmental factors.
Additionally, the device features a small integrated speaker that assists users in locating their AirTag by producing sound when activated via the Find My app. The back cover is designed to be removable, enabling users to replace the battery as necessary.
Through the Find My app, users can track the AirTag on a map. The app also offers enhanced guidance through sound, haptic feedback, and visual directions, utilizing ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope functionalities.
In instances where an AirTag is lost, it can be activated in Lost Mode, which alerts the user when it is found or comes within proximity. If someone else discovers the AirTag, they can tap it with an NFC-enabled device to view the owner’s contact information, if it has been provided.
Apple has incorporated privacy measures into the AirTag to mitigate unauthorized tracking. For example, the Bluetooth signal identifiers used by the AirTag change frequently to prevent tracking by unapproved individuals, and communications within the Find My network are encrypted end-to-end.

The new AirTag is also rumored to have compatibility with Apple’s Vision Pro headset, although specific details regarding this feature remain uncertain. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted last year that the production of the AirTag had been postponed until 2025, but both he and Gurman anticipate a release in the upcoming year. Currently, there are no signs of any alterations to the design.
