Every Thursday, we feature an image from the StarPhoenix archives, curated by the City of Saskatoon Archives. Today, we see a child leaning out over and contemplating — possibly considering jumping into — a giant puddle in the street, from March 13, 1964. Spring melt led to puddles all over town, including this submerged intersection at Avenue K and 11th Street. (City of Saskatoon Archives StarPhoenix Collection S-SP-B28473-1)

From the StarPhoenix archives:

Spring and mud puddles are synonymous, causing grief for mothers who must sponge off soaking-wet children. This great puddle formed at Ave. K and 11th St. The intersection is completely submerged, resembling a corner of Venice. If the puddle gets larger or deeper, buses equipped with pontoons and oars would be a possibility, and passengers might use rafts to keep dry while getting on and off the buses. The tot at the left could be contemplating his reflection in the water, or perhaps, thinking of plunging in.
